 An antique is for life!
I have been dealing in antiques for the last 15 years. In 1996, after a decade's experience of living and working in HK and China, I started Orient Expressions, a company importing high quality 18th and 19th century country antiques from Shanghai. The business quickly grew, developing a client list including the General Trading Company, Shanghai Tang, Liberty and interior designers such as Kelly Hoppen.
In order to help clients see the possibilities for Chinese furniture in their homes, I started to mix European pieces into my stock, developing an eclectic style that has become very popular and reflects the current trend for a personal look, moving away from the minimal interiors of some years ago. Gradually I have evolved into a much more French based look with an occasional Eastern piece where appropriate. More and more in our current interesting financial times, people are realising that antiques are a good investment. Often a simple table or cabinet can be the same price as something from Ikea but the difference is, an antique piece holds its value and is for life. And of course the buying process is that much more enjoyable! We have a home in the Cote de Beaune region of Burgundy and I now head down there for buying trips every six to eight weeks.
